Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), also known as ‘The Gentle Art’, is a martial art, combat sport and self-defense art, which primarily focuses on grappling and submission. This sport became prominent in the early 1990s when Royce Gracie brought BJJ to the Ultimate Fighter Championships, or more well known today as UFC. BJJ is a sport that is successfully practised by men, women, and children of different ages, shapes, sizes and physical abilities. It truly is a sport for everyone. Children practising Jiu-Jitsu are rewarded with a sense of confidence, athleticism and focus while building knowledge of self-defense, which helps in the bully proofing of our youth.
Not only is BJJ a physical challenge, it is also a mental challenge. The physical demands are a combination of cardiovascular endurance, speed, strength training and developing a strong grip to maintain positioning in a match. A small error during a match can drastically affect the outcome of matches. Many athletes declare that the mental preparation is the most challenging obstacle, whether it is their first tournament as a White Belt, or an established World Champion Black Belt. It takes a lot of heart and courage to take the lessons from everyday training and apply them in a tournament setting, with hundreds of people watching. The reward of overcoming both the mental and physical obstacles are second to none.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Canada is a fast growing sport, that embraces the notion of a close knit community where promoters, school owners, competitors, supporters and sponsors can all come together to unite for the love of the sport. The CBJJF is dedicated 100% to growing this sport in a safe and respectable manner where everyone is welcome to compete.
